Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o among 180 nominated for 2025 national heroes list
The list will be officially recognised on Mashujaa Day, October 20, with ceremonies to be held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County.
The National Heroes Council has proposed 180 people to be honoured as national heroes in 2025, including well-known figures from arts, governance, culture, and sports. Among them are John Okumu, Faith Nziva Kithele, Justus Ngemu, Ted Josiah, Jua Cali, and the late E-Sir.
Notable additions include literary giant Prof Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, music producer Clemo (of Calif Records), and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, recognised for their contributions in literature, music, and governance, respectively. The late Fundi Konde and Bosco Mulwa also feature in the arts lineup.

The proposed heroes span other categories beyond the arts—sports (e.g., Harambee Starlets coach Mildred Omani Cheche), environmental conservation, spiritual leadership, indigenous knowledge, peace-making, human rights, and more. The list will be officially recognised on Mashujaa Day, October 20, with ceremonies to be held at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County under the theme “Transforming Lives Through Sustainable Energy Solutions.”
